Green on Everything has been produced many

times in various states of Australia.

The first production was at Backstares Theatre,

Noarlunga, South Australia.  It was directed by

Debra Lamberton.

Cast 16.  The mix of males and females is optional.

Frankie, Jezza, Jo and Rob can be played by either

sex.  Narrators can either be separate, or can be

doubled from the cast.

The Mission Control sequences were on video tape.

OPENING MUSIC: SPACE AGE STYLE THEME. THE STUDENTS ARE ENTERING THE SPACE SHIP. THE PREFECTS ENTER TOGETHER AND TAKE UP A CENTRAL POSITION. CHARLIE ENTERS ALONE WITH HIS PLANT.

SPOTLIGHTS COME UP ON THE TWO NARRATORS WHO ARE IN ELEVATED POSITIONS.

Narrator 1

The year two thousand and ninety one.

Narrator 2

A Christies Beach High School excursion.

Narrator 1

To the planet Mars.

Narrator 2

A two year school excursion.

LIGHTS DOWN ON NARRATORS. MISSION

CONTROL COMES UP ON A LARGE VIDEO

MONITOR. THE STUDENTS ARE IN POSITION

WAITING FOR LIFT OFF LIGHTS UP DIMLY ON

SPACE SHIP.

MISSION CONTROL

Ten nine eight seven six five four three

two one zero.

FLASHING LIGHTS THE STUDENTS ARE PRESSED

 BACK BY THE FORCE OF TAKE OFF. LIGHTS UP

FULL ON SPACE SHIP.

KYLIE

Green on everything.

MISSION CONTROL

All systems go.  We have liftoff.

KYLIE

Mission Control this is spaceship Delta

Zulu, all lights are green, over.

MISSION CONTROL

Roger Delta Zulu...Looks good from here...

Standby... Boosters about to separate...

Separating now... All clear Delta Zulu,

over.

KYLIE

Roger Mission Control. Climbing through

angels one hundred thousand, over.

MISSION CONTROL

Roger Delta Zulu. Orbit will commence in

two minutes thirty. Out.

FLASHING LIGHTS OUT. VIDEO MONITOR FADES.

JO

Hey, Wooby woobah, dig that cool view.

GREG

Far out.

DEBRA

Hey, grab those great colours down there.

Fannnnnn-tastic.

SANDY

Being in space is some blast.

CHARLIE

Their great-great-grandparents were 1960s

hippies.

LIGHTS DOWN ON SPACESHIP. UP ON NARRATORS.

NARRATOR 1

Two months have passed since the spaceship

blasted into space.

NARRATOR 2

Orbited Earth twice.

NARRATOR 1

Waved to their families.

NARRATOR 2

Set course for Mars.

NARRATOR 1

And settled into a routine almost as boring

as school.

LIGHTS UP ON SPACESHIP

ALL

(Tableau) We're bored.(Yawn)

NARRATOR 2

The head prefect was firmly in charge.

ROB

I'm Rob, the head prefect.

NARRATOR 1

Loved by some.

TABLEAU BY ROB'S SUPPORTERS

ROB

I'm in charge.

Narrator 2

Hated by others.

TABLEAU BY ROB'S NON - SUPPORTERS.

BLACKOUT. LIGHTS UP ON SPACESHIP.

ROB

I don't care who hates me. I'm the boss.

WENDY

He's the boss.

FRANKIE

And don't you forget it.

ROB

Cleaning stations. Chop chop. Come on

everybody, let's move.

DEBRA

Bloody cleaning stations.

WENDY

Come on everybody, let's clean up.

JEZZA

Do we have to do this every day?

NIKKI

Worse than home.

MELISSA

And does it always have to be done at five

o'clock in the morning?

THE PREFECTS ARE RIDING SHOT GUN

ON THE OTHERS MAKING THEM CLEAN UP.

THE STUDENTS ARE DOING VARIOUS

CLEANING TASKS. NIKKI IS SWEEPING

AND COMES TO CHARLIE'S PLANT. SHE

GOES TO SWEEP AROUND THE CONTAINER.

ROB STOPS HER.

ROB

Move that stupid plant, Charlie.

CHARLIE

It's not stupid.

ROB

You weren't supposed to bring it with you.

Damned plant, just taking up room.

WENDY

Let's throw it out the space lock.

ROB

Yeah!

ROB GRABS THE PLANT.

CHARLIE

Give it back, Rob.

ALL PAUSE. FOCUS ON CHARLIE.

CHARLIE

(quietly)I said give it back.

THE PAUSE EXTENDS. THEN.

ROB

Out the space lock with it.

ROB, WENDY AND FRANKIE PLAY

KEEPINGS OFF WITH CHARLIE'S PLANT.

EVENTUALLY JO AND CARMEN RESCUE

THE PLANT AND GIVE IT BACK TO CHARLIE.

CHARLIE

You leave it alone.

CARMEN

You're supposed to be leader. Not

troublemaker.

ROB

He shouldn't have brought the damned plant

onboard in the first place.

CHARLIE

Allowed to.

JO

Just leave him alone, Rob.

ROB

Get this clear, Jo. You too Carmen. I am

leader of this expedition and what I say

goes.  If I say that plant goes out, that's

what happens.

WENDY

Rob is the boss.

CHARLIE

Not boss of my plant but.

CARMEN

Don't let it go to your head, Rob.

ROB

I make a report on each and every one of

you at the end of this trip. Depends on

what I put down whether or not you pass.

Don't you forget it.

JO

All hail the dictator.

ROB

That's one for you, Jo baby. If I say that

plant goes, Charlie, it goes. Got it?

CHARLIE AND ROB STARE AT ONE

ANOTHER. NEITHER AVERTS THEIR GAZE.

ROB

You can keep it...For now. Get on with

your work. Who told you all to stop?

BLACKOUT. LIGHTS UP ON SPACESHIP.

CHARLIE

Nother game of trivial pursuit?

ALL SCREAM

CHARLIE

Scrabble?

NIKKI

I'm going to sleep.

SANDY

Me too.

ALL SLEEP EXCEPT JODY AND CHARLIE.

CHARLIE

Not again!

JODY

Play cards?

CHARLIE

Okay.

LIGHTS DOWN ON SPACESHIP. UP ON NARRATORS.

NARRATOR 1

Two months into our journey through the

stars.

NARRATOR 2

Through the inky black emptiness of space.

NARRATOR 1

The computers aboard our spaceship guiding

us along our predetermined path.

NARRATOR 2

To our appointment with another world.

LIGHTS DOWN ON NARRATORS. UP ON SPACESHIP.

JODY

Snap!

CHARLIE

Aw!

JODY

Miss your folks?

CHARLIE

Nah...Miss my dog but.

JODY

You miss your dog but not your family?

CHARLIE

My dog treats me better.

JODY

Oh....

CHARLIE

'salright. You get used to it.

JODY

Suppose you get used to anything.

CHARLIE

Look!

JODY

Snap! Can't fool me with that old trick.

LIGHTS DOWN ON SPACESHIP. UP ON NARRATORS.

NARRATOR 1

And so it went. Boredom in outer space.

Narrator 2

Fifteen students from Christies Beach High

on a school excursion.

NARRATOR 1

To Mars. The red planet.

NARRATOR 2

In the year two thousand and ninety one.

NARRATOR 1

Suddenly....

LIGHTS SNAP OUT ON NARRATORS AND SNAP UP ON SPACESHIP.

CHARLIE

Hey, look!

JODY

Snap!

CHARLIE

Look!!!!

JODY

Knock it off.  I won.

CHARLIE

Wake up everyone. Something's happening.

GREG

What's happening, man?

DEBRA

Nothing ever happens.

JODY

I just won at snap.

CHARLIE

For ... Look at the Earth.

THE STUDENTS FREEZE IN A TABLEAU

AS THE LIGHTS COME UP ON THE

 NARRATORS.

NARRATOR 1

They look at the globe of the Earth spinning

in space.

NARRATOR 2

Far, far away from them.

NARRATOR 1

Small puffs appear on the surface of the

planet.

NARRATOR 2

Small when you're hundreds of thousands of

kilometres away in outer space.

LIGHTS DOWN ON NARRATORS. VIDEO MONITOR COMES ON.

MISSION CONTROL

Space ship Delta Zulu, this is mission

control, do you read me? over.

KYLIE

This is Delta Zulu, we read you loud and

fairly clear Mission Control.

STATIC THROUGH THE REST OF THE BROADCAST BECOMING WORSE.

MISSION CONTROL

...Has broken out delta zulu... stand by....

THE SCREEN FADES. IT CONTINUES TO FLICKER BACK TO LIFE INTERMITTENTLY DURING THE REST OF THE BROADCAST.

KYLIE

Mission Control this is Delta Zulu, do you

read me? over...Come in Mission Control,

over.

MISSION CONTROL

Repeat ... Nuclear war has broken out...

nuclear winter ... Large ... Expected two

years before planet habitable... Standby.

 ...Missiles falling...Adelaide blown away...

All other capital cities gone... Standby

... Missile alert... Your hands Delta Zulu

... Good luck....

SILENCE.

KYLIE

Come in Mission Control...Come in ... This

is spaceship Delta Zulu, come in Mission

Control...Mission Control.

JEZZA

It's no good.

CHARLIE

Clouds sweeping across Earth.

MELISSA

Everything gone.

NIKKI

Nothing left.

DEBRA

Nothing

JODY

Me mum and dad.

CHARLIE

My dog.

SILENCE. EACH OF THE CHARACTERS

IS TRYING TO DEAL WITH THE ENORMITY

 OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED. THE SILENCE

EXTENDS UNTIL SAM BREAKS IT.

SAM

Who's to blame?

SILENCE.

SAM

Well who's to bloody blame?

SILENCE

SAM

I want to know whose fault it is.

SILENCE. SAM RISES. HE PACES THE

LENGTH OF THE SPACESHIP AND BACK.

 HE IS LIKE A TIGHT, COILED SPRING,

DESPERATE IN HIS GRIEF.

SAM

Someone answer me.

CARMEN

Shut up, Sam.

SAM

It stands to reason, someone must be to

blame.

CARMEN

Sit down.

SAM

Everyone on Earth gone. How? Why? Who

did it?

CARMEN

It's no use, Sam.

SAM

I want to bloody know.

BLACKOUT. LIGHTS COME UP SLOWLY

ONCE AGAIN ON THE SPACESHIP.

SILENCE. PEOPLE ARE STILL DEALING

WITH THE ISSUE ON A PERSONAL LEVEL.

SAM SITS BY HIMSELF, HEAD IN HANDS

OR SOME OTHER ATTITUDE THAT CLOSES

HIM OFF FROM THE OTHERS. ROB BREAKS THE SILENCE.

ROB

Bloody Russians.

GREG

Heavy!

ROB

War mongers for a hundred and seventy

years.

GREG

Heavy!!

ROB

War mongers.

SAM

It's got to be somebody's fault.

JO

The yanks weren't?

STYLIZED MOVEMENT SEQUENCE BETWEEN

AMERICAN AND RUSSIANSOLDIERS. AN

AMERICAN POLITICIAN AND A RUSSIAN

POLITICIAN STAND AT THE REAR OF THE

TROOPS. MUCH DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.

BLACKOUT.

A CHANT IS HEARD "FAULT FAULT FAULT

FAULT ETC. BUILDING UP AND UP. LIGHTS

UP ON SPACESHIP. SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE

HOLDING SAM DOWN. ONLY SAM CONTINUES

THE "FAULT" CHANT. COMMOTION BEGINS

WITH EVERYONE BLAMING ONE SIDE OR THE

OTHER OR BOTH. OVER ALL OF THIS WE STILL

HEAR SAM. CARMEN IS TRYING TO PACIFY

PEOPLE. BLACKOUT. LIGHTS UP ON SPACESHIP.

ROB

Russians started it you bet.

WENDY

Yeah.

FRANKIE

You bet.

JO

Oh, stop being heavy.

CARMEN

What would you know?

JEZZA

How does anyone know?

ROB

I know.

FRANKIE

We know who started it, don't we Rob?

JEZZA

You wouldn't know if your arse was on fire.

ROB

Take that back you little twerp or I'll...

JEZZA

You'll what...?  What?

Rob

You'll find out.

JEZZA

Put me in your notebook?

CARMEN

Knock it off everyone, please.

FRANKIE

Russians started it and this time we called

their bluff.

JO

Sure did.

MELISSA

Yep!

JODY

Wiped out everybody.

CHARLIE

My dog.

ROB

Oh stuff your dog.

WENDY

Bloody Russians.

CARMEN

Yanks and Russians.

ROB

Bull.

FRANKIE

Yeah, bull.

WENDY

That's right.

JEZZA

That's crap.

ROB

It's history.

FRANKIE

Read your history books.

SAM

Wonder what their history books said.

WENDY

Ever read the newspapers?

JO

What?  You didn't believe them did you?

ROB

Russians.

ALL JOIN IN THE GENERAL ARGUMENT

WHICH BUILDS TO A CLIMAX. ROB,

FRANKIE AND WENDY FOLLOW THEIR

PRO AMERICAN LINE. JO, CHARLIE,

MELISSA, KYLIE SAM AND CARMEN

ARGUE THAT BOTH SIDES ARE TO BLAME.

JEZZA, NIKKI, SANDY. GREG, DEBRA AND

JODY WAVER BETWEEN THE TWO

POSITIONS. CARMEN CUTS THE

ARGUMENT OFF AT ITS CLIMAX.

CARMEN

Oh stop it stop it stop it!!!  What does it

matter now who started it or didn't start

it you morons. You are doing exactly what

everyone did down there on Earth and they

are all dead. D.E.A.D. dead and we are the

only ones left alive. Sit down and shut up

all of you. (she cries)  Sit down and

shut up.

LIGHTS DOWN ON SPACESHIP. UP ON NARRATORS.

NARRATOR 1

Everyone on Earth blown away.

NARRATOR 2

That's another way of saying dead.

NARRATOR 1

Very dead.

NARRATOR 2

The only people left are the Christies Beach

fifteen.

NARRATOR 1

On a school excursion.

NARRATOR 2

Into outer space.

NARRATOR 1

To Mars.  The red planet.

NARRATOR 2

The only human beings left alive.

NARRATOR 1

In their hands the future of the human race.

HEY, THESE KIDS ARE IN TROUBLE.

THE ONLY HUMANS LEFT ALIVE.

HOW WILL THEY SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY GO BACK?
